Application Description
The Speed4Web is an Internet connection accelerator and speed analyzer.
Its functions are the following:
-
Speeds up Web Browsing
-
Gives you control over disturbing advertisements
-
Provides you with the tool to gauge your Web Browsing Speed
The Application window structure
The application window consists of three sections.
You can click the left mouse button to mark or clear each
check box. For example:
 |
"Accelerate" check box is cleared |
 |
"Accelerate" check box is marked |
By using your mouse to choose one of the functional items, you will
receive a brief explanation for each item. For example: pointing
to the
check box brings up a brief help text that shows the following:
Show pictures check
box
This option works with Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.0 and higher.
Clear this check box so that your browser will not take additional time
for downloading pictures. In short, use this option to reduce
your downloading time considerably, if pictures are not
that important, and you simply would like to read the text content on the
web page. For example: perfect for news based web sites. You
may also choose which pictures you would like displayed on your web page.
Using your mouse as a pointer, click on the picture with the right mouse
button, a menu will pop up, select "Show Picture" allowing
your browser to load that specific picture.
Play animations check
box
This option works with Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.0 and higher.
Clear the check box, if you are not interested in playing animated pictures
(GIF files). Note that playing animated pictures also slows web page
downloading, so only mark this check box if you are interested in having
animation on your web page.
Accelerate check
box
When this check box is left marked, Speed4Web automatically tweaks your
PC for maximum Internet performance. We recommend that you always
keep this check box marked, so that your Internet connection will be consistently
optimized for best results. If you leave this check box clear, Speed4Web
allows the original Internet connection settings to resume, allowing you
to compare the Internet connection speed of your PC without optimization.
As a reminder: to switch between the two modes (non-acceleration and
acceleration modes), you must restart your PC. In such case an
sign appears on the right-hand side of the button. For example,
the Accelerate check box appearance such as
means that Speed4Web application has successfully optimized your Internet
connection for maximum performance and a PC restart is required.
Show graph check box
This check box turns the Graphic Analyzer to either the "On" or "Off" position.
Leave this check box clear if you plan to use only the left-hand Speed4Web
check box features. Leaving this feature off reduces the size of
the application window, as the Graphic Analyzer section disappears.
Please note that Speed4Web allows you to change both the
screen position and size of the application window for each mode separately.
Always on top check
box
When this check box is marked, the application window remains on top of
all other windows of your desktop. Clear this check box if you prefer
to allow other windows to be above the Speed4Web application window.
Help button
Click this button to view a full description of the application and directions
for its use.
Brief Help pane
The text in this pane displays a brief explanation of the feature that
is currently being pointed at with the use of your mouse. If you
would like a full description of the application and directions for its
use, click the
button.
Internet connection
speed Graphic Analyzer
The Graphic Analyzer consists of two graphs and a slide ruler.
-
Receiving speed - upper graph
-
Sending speed - lower graph
-
Time scale slide ruler- above upper graph
Each graph has vertical and horizontal scales.
Vertical scale show the Internet connection speed in Kilobytes per
second (Kbytes/sec). The speed scale zoom is chosen automatically
by the application corresponding to the maximum speed that has been
registered by Speed4Web.
The horizontal scale shows the time. You can chose any time interval
for speed history investigation by using the by using
the Time Scale Slide Ruler.
The graphs move from right to the left. The height of each NEW column
shows the speed at the present moment. In the example below, the currently registered
receiving speed is 93 Kbytes/sec.
Time Scale Slide Ruler
Use the slide ruler to choose the period of time that you would like to retrieve
the connection speed history for.
-
The minimum period that can be selected is 60 seconds.
-
The maximum period that can be selected is 12 hours.
If you don't change the time interval, the application will show the last
60 seconds of speed history. Please notice that Speed4Web automatically saves the full speed
history for last 12 hours.
While you drag the handle of the slide ruler, you can see the current
selection displayed above the slide ruler:

Time scale zoom depends on your chosen time interval.
For example: If you choose 120 seconds on the slide ruler,
the time scale looks like this:
If you choose 3 hours on the slide ruler, the time scale looks like
this:
Upper graph
The receiving speed graph shows the Internet connection performance for
incoming data. Each vertical bar shows the download speed at a given
moment. If you would like to gauge the download time of any web page
or file, wait few seconds and then start the download. Gold columns
will appear stacked together on the graph, and on the left and right of
these columns you will notice black empty spaces. Now, stop the moving
graph by clicking on it for analysis.

| Download started 30 sec. ago |
|
Download ended 20 sec. ago |
|
Download time is 10 sec. |
The gold color space found between the "30" and "20" in that case, shows
that the measured download time of this page is 10 seconds.
After you have finished gauging, click the graph again to resume the
update. If you forget to do so, the update will resume automatically
within 20 seconds.
Lower graph
The sending speed graph shows us the Internet connection performance for
outgoing data. This is useful for gauging how long it takes to send an
email, picture, etc... The sending speed graph is constructed the
same way as the upper graph. Please note that the receiving speed
is typically 5 times higher than the sending speed with most Internet connection
solutions.
Window size and position
You can enhance the working space on your desktop by making both of graphs
more compact or making the lower graph completely disappeared. To do this,
squeeze the window vertically. All other sections (check boxes and
upper graph) will remain visible.

You can also save working space by narrowing the window horizontally or
compacting both graphs. To hide the Graphic Analyzer section completely
- simply clear
check box. Please note that the Speed4Web application allows you
to change the screen position and size of the main window for each mode
separately.
When you click on the "minimize" button, the main application window disappears
completely and the application continues to function in hidden mode.
In order to bring the window back, click on Task bar icon
.
You will notice that the connection speed history is collected while the
application runs in the hidden mode.
The position and size of the application window are saved automatically,
in addition to the information on status of all the check boxes.
These settings are saved even after you shut down your computer.
Task bar icon
Speed4Web has multi-functional icon in the Task Bar notification area (that is usually placed
at the right bottom corner of the screen). If the application window
is hidden, you may click the icon to allow it to be visible. The second purpose
of the icon is Internet data traffic indication. The left half of the icon
shows receiving speed at the moment using green color bar. The right half of the icon
shows sending speed at the moment using pink color bar. The height of the bars reflects
the current speed. When no data flow through your Internet connection, the icon is black.
The Task Bar icon is always visible even when the
main window is not. In any case, looking on that icon, you can check
the status of data traffic through your Internet connection. Of course, if you want to
investigate your Internet connection speed in details or to check its history, you should
click the Task Bar icon to bring main window up and then to use Graphic Analyzer.
